The Most Common Styles of Interior Design

Clearly, not everyone is an interior design expert. Some people don’t even realize there are different interior design styles, such as shabby chic, modern, and industrial. If you were to ask a business owner which interior design style they would prefer for their facility, they wouldn’t be able to give you a clear answer. They may have thoughts and ideas about the visualization of the design, but they won’t know the right words to use to describe what they want. Since there are so many different styles available, it may be hard for anyone to figure out which style they want. Sometimes a person might want to use certain elements for various interior design styles in order to create a unique look for their environment.

If you are new to the world of interior design styles, here are descriptions of the most common styles that you will come across. Hopefully, this will help you decide which one is right for you.

Modern

A modern style design usually means it is a simple interior design. The color palette will only contain a few basic colors which make the interior look clean and ordinary. The materials which you can expect to be used are steel, metal, and glass. There is a great emphasis on space when it comes to the modern style design. You will typically see a lot of white walls and standard furniture pieces in the living space. Interiors with a modern style have been decluttered of most accessories and items which are unnecessary for the design.

Contemporary

A lot of people confuse the modern style design with the contemporary design. This is understandable since contemporary and modern are words that are often used interchangeably. But you must remember that modern generally refers to a recent period of time while contemporary is referring to the here and now. For instance, modern could mean the time over the last 100 years. Contemporary focuses more on recent design trends and doesn’t adhere to just one design style. Where you might see straight clean lines in the modern style, the contemporary style will have curved lines. It all depends on what the trend is currently.

Minimalist

The minimalist style design goes a step further in the simplicity aspect of the modern style. You will find neutral colors on the color palette, although white is definitely the most popular color. There will likely be fewer furnishings in the living space than you would see in the modern style. Anyone who wants to create more space and put more emphasis on their flooring and walls will want to use the minimalist style.

Industrial

Industrial style designs have an old-fashioned feel to them. You will likely see a lot of wood and brick materials used for the flooring and walls of the interior. There may even be ductwork seen along the high ceilings too. Many elements of the design are going to look raw and sturdy as if you were living in a warehouse. Metal light fixtures will dangle from the ceiling and every inch of the interior will feel durable and unbreakable. The two most popular colors will be metal and wood. These, of course, will come from the materials themselves so they don’t need to be painted on. You can just apply a finish coating to preserve their lifespan.
